When: Marietta Council meeting, April 9. Council members Miles Lauver and Steven Debottis were absent.

What happened: During a review of its financial accounts, council questioned why its sewer and recycling fund has over $306,000 but earned only $13.15 in interest this month.

Response: “That is sad. The interest rate should be $1,200,” said Mayor Rebecca Carroll-Baltozer.

More: “We will be looking into this,” said President Frederick “Freddy” States. “Every little bit counts.”

War Memorial Park: The new pickleball and tennis courts are complete. Keys to the courts can be purchased for $5 at the borough office. States said the borough plans to apply for one more grant for the park this year as part of the state’s Greenway Trails and Recreation Program. The next phase of Marietta’s master plan for the development of its recreation areas includes securing a grant to build new baseball, football and softball fields.

Trees: Resident Linda Ross asked for explanation of the steps involved to remove the vines from the trees lining many of Marietta’s streets. “If the vines are not removed, the trees will die,” she said. “What will be done with all the vines?”

Response: States said an option could be to take the vines to the Columbia Borough farm, which offers free yard waste dumping on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. The borough would need to receive permission from homeowners for any trees that were partially on their property.

What’s next: The next council meeting will be held on May 14.
