2023 Warwick at McCaskey Track & Field

Emery Plaza of McCaskey runs in the 110 meter high hurdle dash against Warwick during L-L League track and field action at McCaskey School in Lancaster on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

LEBANON — McCaskey clinched the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One titles in both boys and girls track and field with wins at Cedar Crest’s Earl Boltz Stadium on Monday evening.

The Red Tornado boys won by an 81-69 score, while the girls won 92-58.

Boys

For McCaskey, the meet came down to outscoring the Falcons by more on the track than Cedar Crest would outscore them in the field. The Red Tornado won 10 of the 11 track events and took 70 of the 87 points from them.

The success on the track was spread out, with only Leudy Diaz winning two individual events. He took the 100-meter dash in 10.9 and the 200 in 22.6.

Diaz was also a part of the 400 and 3,200 relay victories for McCaskey. The 400 team, which also had Emery Plaza, Felix Mendez and Haneef Porter, posted a 42.8. The 3,200 squad, with Tyran London, Benjamin Gillespie and Matthew McNair, turned in a 9:04.9.

McNair won the 1,600 meters with a 4:41.1, Plaza took the 300 hurdles with a 39.0 and London claimed the 800 with a 2:02.1.

Reese Olenik ran a 15.1 to win the 110 hurdles, and Cody Becan finished in 51.0 to win the 400.

The team victory was already settled by the time the 1,600 relay started, but for good measure, the Red Tornado won that as well with a 3:28.0 from London, Greg Medina, Becan and Juan Colon.

The effort on the track was similar to what head coach Derek Jennings is hoping for in this weekend’s upcoming L-L championship meet.

“Our league is incredible, and this year is no different,” Jennings said. “You’ve got to get everyone on their A-game, which is a challenge, but a challenge we are looking forward to.”

The one Cedar Crest win on the track was turned in by Travis Furmanski, who won the 3,200 meters with a 9:59.7.

“He’s been hurt all year with an ankle sprain,” Falcons head coach Rob Bare said. “This was just his second race back. That’s incredible.”

The Falcons swept the field events. Dylan Groff won three times — the long jump (20 feet, 8.25 inches), triple jump (40-11.5) and the javelin (171-5).

Alex Kissinger won two events. He had a throw of 48-1.5 in the shot and 135-0 in the discus.

Cameron Tirado won the high jump with a 6-0, edging his brother Leo on fewest misses. Chris Viveros claimed the pole vault with an 11-3.

Girls

McCaskey got a break early and made use of it to cruise to victory.

In the 3,200 relay, Cedar Crest came from behind in the last 150 meters to win, but during that surge, the anchor runner was disqualified for stepping inside the line on the last turn. That gave McCaskey an early lead it never lost.

Multiple victories by Linda Hussein, Hana Hussein and Genesis Castro built the advantage from there.

Linda Hussein took the long jump with a 16-4 and the 100 hurdles in 15.5 seconds. The long jump victory was key to the Red Tornado.

“We were hoping to close out the meet, to go 1-2 in the long jump with Linda and Corrine Miller, who each did four events today,” Jennings said. “We knew that would be a close event and that helped us.”

Hana Hussein won the triple jump with a 34-8.5 and the 300 hurdles with a 47.6. Castro claimed the shot with a 34-8.25 and the discus with a 132-6.

Other individual winners for McCaskey were Isabella Shertzer with a 2:17.1 in the 800 and Gabby Thiry with a 12:14.2 in the 3,200.

The Red Tornado also won the 400 relay with a 48.4, turned in by Damani Crosson, Aasly DeLeon, Isabel Roman and Miller.

Six of Cedar Crest’s eight wins were solo victories by two of their blue-chip performers: Kaddel Howard and Eliana Schneider.

Schneider won the high jump with a 4-10, the javelin with a 130-2 and the 1,600 with a 5:22.0.

Howard won the 100 with an 11.8, the 200 with a 24.4 and 400 with a 54.6. She also anchored the winning 1,600 relay, finishing the 4:02.0 that Lindsey Hecksher, Opeyemi Ojo and Makenzie Wamsher started.

“Obviously, Kaddel was a big star tonight and Eliana was a big star tonight,” Bare said.

Ruby Wolfe won the pole vault for the Falcons with a 10-6.
