Manheim Central vs. Warwick - L-L League boys volleyball championship

A relatively cut and dried night of L-L League boys volleyball action on Thursday’s slate. No humongous upsets. And not a ton of intrigue; four of the six section matches featured 3-0 finals, and nobody went five sets. Here’s the roundup, plus some notables

SECTION 1

Warwick 3, McCaskey 0Nathan Wenger (36 assists), Thomas Mejia (14 kills) and Connor Martin (11 digs) were the catalysts, and the Warriors won their seventh straight section match and remained alone in first place compliments of a 25-17, 25-10, 25-22 win over the host Red Tornado. Warwick — looking for its third section title in a row — has a 1-game lead over Hempfield, and the Warriors will welcome the Black Knights on Tuesday. Circle that one. Ishmael Chea (15 assists), Chri Htoo (5 digs) and Sam Hoover (4 kills) paced McCaskey.

Hempfield 3, Conestoga Valley 1 — The Buckskins made it interesting with a second-set win, but the host Black Knights rallied nicely and remained alone on the 2-line in the section hunt with a 25-18, 18-25, 25-13, 25-21 victory. Marcel Boyreau (24 assists), Brady Rigard (17 digs), Spencer Troyer (4 blocks) and Finley Hunt (11 kills) showed the way for Hempfield, which will play at first-place Warwick on Tuesday. Rowan Aisenbrey (16 digs), Noah Huynh (17 assists) and Jack Newkirk (8 kills) led CV.

Manheim Township had the Section 1 bye on Thursday.

SECTION 2

Manheim Central 3, Lancaster Mennonite 0 — The Barons inched closer to defending their section crown after a 25-18, 25-12, 25-9 triumph over the host Blazers. Colin Rohrer sparked the defense with 13 digs, Dylan Musser set up 25 assists and Jacob Moyer slammed 11 kills for Central, which wrapped up the week at No. 2 in the PVCA-2A state rankings. Lukas Muenstermann (12 assists), Jesse Longenecker (7 kills) and Nik Martiny (8 digs) paced Mennonite, which slipped into a fourth-place tie with Elizabethtown.

PVCA BOYS VOLLEYBALL STATE RANKINGS

Cocalico 3, Lebanon 0 — The Eagles remained alone in second place after topping the host Cedars 25-10, 25-12, 25-16, as Cocalico snapped back nicely after falling to undefeated Manheim Central on Tuesday. Yohannis Hildebrand (10 kills, 5 aces), Andrew Kirk (3 blocks) and Colson Hildebrand (13 assists, 7 digs) made the Eagles tick, while Tyson Griffiths (8 digs, 7 assists, 5 blocks) stuffed the stat page for Lebanon.

Elizabethtown 3, Ephrata 1 — The Bears snapped a fourth-place tie with the host Mountaineers compliments of a hard-fought 25-16, 26-28, 25-23, 25-20 victory. Cooper Torborg smashed 16 kills, Matthew Kerin teed up 29 assists and Prabin Bhattarai had 23 body-slamming digs for E-town, which now shares fourth place with Lancaster Mennonite. Braydon Fries (32 assists), Austin Fries (12 kills) and Josh Oberholtzer (16 digs, 2 blocks) sparked Ephrata.

Garden Spot had the Section 2 bye on Thursday.

In another Section 1 matchup, Cedar Crest got some revenge, rolling into Penn Manor for a shutout victory on Thursday to shake up the section standings yet again. Here's the story

* Two nonleague matches on Friday: Garden Spot heads to Berks County to take on Schuylkill Valley and Lancaster Mennonite will play at Manheim Township. Then a pair of teams — Section 2 foes Cocalico and Elizabethtown — will play in Dallastown’s Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, starting bright and early at 8:30 a.m.
