Snake in the Well

A private water well at the home of Allyson Ulsh, in Dauphin County, had at least two snakes in the well head when she found it earlier in summer 2019.

Lancaster County residents can learn how to test the water in their private well and receive one free testing kit at an educational event hosted by the Penn State Extension on June 3.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Farm and Home Center on 1383 Arcadia Road in Lancaster city. Participants should register by May 30 - registration can be accessed at lanc.news/welltestingworkshop.

More than 35,000 private wells are found in Lancaster County, according to the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.

The workshop’s provided water test will assess the following: bacteria, pH, nitrate, manganese, lead, copper, barium, sodium and arsenic.

Workshop participants will use a prepaid mailer to send their test results to a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection accredited laboratory.

Funding for the event came from a partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control, with additional support from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
