He’s back.
Not that Matt Zamperini was gone for very long. But Garden Spot’s football coach has indeed returned, and he is in the saddle leading the Spartans’ pigskin program, LNP has confirmed.
Zamperini resigned his post back on Feb. 29 for undisclosed reasons.
On March 11, Garden Spot’s school board voted 7-2 not to accept his resignation after, according to an LNP report, about 15 people spoke at the meeting, praising Zamperini.
The coach then withdrew his resignation on March 15, and Zamperini returned to his coaching duties on March 18, an LNP report confirmed.
Zamperini has coached Garden Spot’s football team for 14 seasons in two stints in New Holland. The Spartans are 79-77 overall under his watch.
Zamperini’s first ride as Garden Spot’s skipper was from 2006 through 2015. The Spartans went 56-52 with a Section 3 title in 2012 and a trip to the District 3 semifinals in 2008 during that clip.
He returned to the Spartans’ sideline prior to the 2019 season. In his second stint as head coach, Zamperini guided Garden Spot to the district playoffs in 2022 and 2023, and the Spartans shared the Section 3 championship this past season.
Zamperini is a biology and environmental science teacher at Garden Spot. And now, after a three-week pause, he’s back coaching the Spartans’ football team.
